Me!

Hello, my name is John Mern. I am an Artificial Intelligence researcher and a machine learning engineer at a Bay Area startup.

I got my PhD after five years in the Stanford Intelligent Systems Laboratory. Before that, I worked on unmanned systems at Boeing Phantom Works.

I continue researching AI techniques and applications and am always looking for new questions and opportunities.

Work Together

I am always open to learning and teaching. If you’re interested in discussing any research, learning about AI/ML, or want consultation on an application idea, feel free to reach out below.

My Expertise:

Artificial Intelligence, deep machine learning, reinforcement learning, Monte Carlo tree planning, computer vision

Some Highlights

A.I. Researcher

Stanford Intelligent Systems Lab (SISL)

As a PhD candidate in SISL, I researched AI methods to solve sequential decision making problems, in particular deep reinforcement learning and Monte Carlo tree search. I have applied my work to many different fields including autonomous vehicle control, renewable energy development, and cyber network security.

Autonomous Systems Architect

Boeing, Phantom Works

I started at Boeing as a structural design engineer for advanced unmanned system prototypes. I eventually became a systems architect, in which role I worked to develop requirements and conceptual designs for new systems.

CTO/Founder

Entheleon Technologies Inc.

During my PhD I founded a deep tech startup company, Entheleon . We developed a deep learning based video compression codec to enable transmission of video over low-bandwidth channels. We raised venture capital funding and won several SBIR awards to develop the technology.
